So here are my tips to The ultimate Christmas Make Up!

This is the time to be bold and have some fun with Makeup now the party season is upon us.
Some useful tips to get you ready for the party:
Keep the foundation light and dewy and as fresh as possible, you don't want your skin looking dull! A tinted moisturizer or light reflecting foundation is perfect.

This is the time to perfect the seductive smoky eye as above - using greys, charcoals and lots of blending.  Keep the colours on the eye lids lighter and darken the eye socket and the top and bottom lash line finishing with a black khol pencil around the lashes.  Don't forget to finish the look with some killer lashes, there are so many to choose!

After the glamour shoot with the X Factor contestants recently I think everyone should try a red or wine colour lip to really stand out at the party! But keep the edges of the lip soft. You use your finger to gently smudge the edges for a more "worn" look.

Why Volume Is More About Shampoo Than Genetics

If you are one of the lucky people who moans about  having enough hair to fill a mattress, then this post is not for you (sorry) .

In the Salon's we have lots of people who come in saying their hair is 'lifeless' and has no 'oomph'.  Whilst the cut plays a major part in the manageability and the end look of your hair... Many people seem to forget that one of the most major factors in their styling is the Shampoo and Conditioner that they use.
We are firm believers in our L'oreal ranges (Kerastase does exactly what it says on the tin) and whilst many people think that Salons are not the place to buy their Shampoo, let us tell you that the Supermarket aisle may be more enemy than friend.

You must let your Stylist diagnose your hair type and any issues that you have should be brought to their attention.  Chances are you may have limp and lifeless hair, in which case have you given any thought that your conditioner may be too heavy? Or the shampoo you use may not be suited for your hair type and weighing it down?

A good Shampoo and Conditioner are the fundamentals to a good hair care routine, the same as you would cleanse and moisturise your face every day, you should get yourself into a good hair care routine and reap the benefits in the long term.  We advise the following routine;

1.  Discuss with your stylist what you feel the problem issues of your hair/scalp are.  Sometimes what you perceive as a problem, really isn't that major.  Listen to their advice and take it on board.

2.  Find out what Shampoo in the Salon suits you and your hair needs best. Before you say it... Yes we know they are more expensive than the Supermarket alternatives, however you will find that you actually use a professionally supplied Shampoo and Conditioner less than your generic brands.  In the long run it is no more expensive (just hide it from the husband and the kids who use half a bottle per wash!)  At Tommy's we don't want your shampoo used once, and then sitting on the bathroom shelf for the next 6 years.  If you don't like the Shampoo after the first 3 uses, you can bring it back, and we will offer an alternative, no questions asked.  Volumising shampoos like Serioxyl from L'oreal, Muroto Volume from Shu Uemura and Densifique from Kerastase are amazing products that really do work!

3. Consider what Styling products your stylist uses.  We know nobody knows your hair better than you, but t
hey look after your hair, and have a completely objective opinion.  They have realistically used anywhere between 1 and 3 styling products on your hair to give it that 'oomph' and the body that you have when you walk out of the salon.  If they can't do it without those products which they advise...How are you going to do it...on your own...with your arm bent in crazy angles to get the blow dryer to the back of your head?  It's not just because they are fantastic stylists that they can make your hair look thicker (although that is a good wedge of it!) It's also down to the products that they use.

4. Don't be scared to ask your Stylist for tips. If you are like we said above... turning yourself into a human pretzel to attain volume with a blow dryer, then don't be afraid to ask your Stylist about what you can do at home on your own.  They will more than likely have simple techniques for you to achieve a similar result when not sat in the chair.

What have you got to lose? In the long run you will save yourself time, and money.  As well as have fantastic hair!

Our Ice Bucket Challenge!

Of course, it was inevitable that we were going to be nominated at some point for an ice bucket challenge!  We do believe, that ALS is a very worthy cause, seeing what those people go through genuinely touched us, and we can completely understand why so many are helping raise awareness to make the condition manageable for it's victims.

We also felt, at the Ruthin Salon, that there was another very worthy cause, and it is located much closer to our home, and hearts.  Freya Bailey is a 4 year old girl who has a form of cerebral palsy which currently prevents her from walking without a frame or unaided.  There is a window of opportunity to raise money to give Freya a life changing operation which means that she will be able to run, skip, jump, and walk like any other four year old should be able to.

This means sending her to a specialised hospital in the USA, and amazingly she has been deemed suitable for the operation, and they believe that it holds a high chance of success.  This, however, means raising £65,000 to help her and her family get there to deliver this life changing surgery.   To help her along, we donated our ice bucket challenge to Freya, and we nominated three other local businesses to do the same.

So here it is, our nomination, and if you think you could help change this little girls life, then visit www.justgiving.com/freyasfreedom and donate, or text 'FFJG65 £3' to 70070. You can also follow Freya's progress, and any fundraising events if you wish to help at www.facebook.com/freyasfreedom

The Bandana

Recently seen posing for one of the most famous 'girl power' shots of the century, Beyonce rocked a bandana in the recent picture, showing that not only is it coming back in to style, it's also actually quite functional... Want to wear one?  Here's how!

Wear it like a headband

Fold into a triangle and roll into a band, then tie at the nape of the neck, this is great for a casual look, teamed with denim or a summer dress.

Wear it as a top / side knot

This look is the classic, and can be used to keep hair off the back of the neck whilst adding a chic touch to some casual outfits, pick brightly coloured prints to add some volume to otherwise plain t-shirts and tops.

Rihanna made this also work for a more dressed up affair, by matching a black bandana with the dress and cape jacket.

The Retro Pin-Up

Beyonce showed this recently as mentioned above, and it's a great combo with most summer outfits.  Add volume to the fringe or the top of the hair to accentuate the  piece and really add that retro feel to your hair.

The Bonnet

This is something that can disguise a multitude of hair sins if you are having an off day!  Fold into the triangle, and place at the back of the head and tie, tuck the bandana in and if wearing a quiff, then secure with pins or tuck underneath the bandana.  If you want to do it loosely this will also protect curls / pinned hair from too much movement before a night out!

THERE SHE BLOWS!

As with all Hairdressing tips, nothing quite beats the stylist when you sit down in their chair, they ruffle up your locks and within 15 seconds they've achieved a look that you would be battling in front of the mirror for a good hour to achieve.  Well here are our top tips from Llandudno Stylist Jonny Williams to achieving your perfect blowdry.

Prep tips:
First of all, shake it!  No not your best Miley Cyrus impression, shake your products before applying them! For lots of body and volume, layer a root lift spray at the top with a volumising foam such as the Volumactive Expansion Mousse from Kerastase, to give gravity defying volume. If your hair is coarse and frizzy use an oil product such as Shu Uemura Essence Absolue, remember this goes a long way so not too much. A lot of products don't have heat protectors in as standard, so check and use a separate one if not, I highly reccommend the Forme Fatale or Lift Vertige from the Kerastase Styling range, these are great styling hold as well as protection for heat.

1. Rough dry your hair without the nozzle attachment (this makes it a lot quicker) until it’s 90% dry, don't try to blowdry your hair into a style from wet, it just won't work. As you do so, lift the hair up at the front for root lift and tip your head upside down for volume. This means that the hair will be lifted upward and give more volume.

2. Attach the nozzle for directional styling and using a round bristle brush work on small sections, It may feel like it takes a while but smaller sections will make it easier, and give you a better overall finish. Start with the top middle section of hair to give this the most time to set. Dry it forwards and backwards against the roots for lift then roll the sections around your brush. Heat it up then cool it down with the ‘cool shot’ setting (ever wondered what that little button does on your hairdryer??).  Pay attention to the ends when you lift them up between the hairdryer and the brush as to what shape you want to achieve.  Concentrating more on these parts with the brush and the hairdryer will give you a more definite curl at the end, or roll up and heat slowly to achieve a more longer curl. Separate the hair from the brush and pin the section up as it sets.

3. Repeat this technique until you have done all of your head.  Then spray with a light hairspray to achieve a degree of hold.

4.  Take the pins out, and tip your head upside again, ruffling from the root to achieve even more lift. Back-comb the roots with a fine comb in the underneath sections to achieve even more volume, style, and if you want to concentrate more on the curl, then curl with straighteners to get the desired look.  Fix with hairspray, and then hit the town!
